FLORIDA HOMELESS PROGRAM RECEIVES HUD AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE

WASHINGTON – A Jacksonville, Florida homeless program is the recipient of the 2007 HUD Secretary’s Opportunity and Empowerment Award for excellence in planning. Funded in part by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Clara White Mission received this year’s award for its aggressive plan to provide permanent housing solutions for chronically homeless individuals and families. WASHINGTON- The Bush Administration has put in place responsible solutions to help American families stay in their homes and avoid foreclosure, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Deputy Secretary Roy A. Bernardi said today. Delivering the keynote address at the Federal Home Loan Banks Annual Directors Conference, Bernardi highlighted President Bush's responsible plan to strengthen the economy and help homeowners by allowing HUD's Federal Housing Administration (FHA) to be "a good safeguard against foreclosure. HUD AND VA TO PROVIDE PERMANENT HOUSING FOR AN ESTIMATED 10,000 HOMELESS VETERANS

NEW YORK – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary James B. Peake and U.S. Housing and Urban Development Deputy Secretary Roy A. Bernardi today announced $75 million to provide permanent supportive housing for an estimated 10,000 homeless veterans nationwide. Bernardi and Peake made the announcement with Mayor Michael Bloomberg at a newly renovated housing program for homeless veterans in Queens and emphasized the Federal and local government's partnership to house and support America's homeless veteran population. HUD CELEBRATES FIRST-EVER FAIR HOUSING EDUCATION IN AMERICA DAY

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development today announced its first-ever "Fair Housing Education in America Day" to be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2008. Designed for 4th through 6th grade students, this national education project will give teachers, parents and their children a basic understanding of the landmark Fair Housing Act. Full release
FLORIDA HOUSING AUTHORITY RETURNED TO LOCAL CONTROL AFTER FOUR YEARS UNDER FEDERAL RECEIVERSHIP

WASHINGTON - Following four years under federal control, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) retuned the Riviera Beach (Fla.) Housing Authority (RBHA) to local governance earlier this week. Anthony Britto, HUD-appointed Director of Recovery Operations and Victor Rocher, Acting Director of Public Housing of the HUD Miami Field Office, joined Riviera Beach Mayor Thomas Masters and RBHA Executive Director Philip Goombs on Monday, March 31st at City Hall to hand over the housing authority to the city. HUD MARKS 40th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FAIR HOUSING ACT

WASHINGTON – More than 10,000 people filed housing discrimination complaints last year, most from persons with disabilities, according to an annual report released today by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. HUD also found that race-based housing discrimination was the second most frequent reason individuals filed complaints. Full release
