HUD ENCOURAGES TEXAS AND LOUISIANA LANDLORDS TO LIST VACANCIES IN THE NATIONAL HOUSING LOCATOR SYSTEM TO HELP DISPLACED FAMILIES

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is appealing to landlords in Texas and Louisiana to list their vacant properties on HUD's National Housing Locator System (NHLS). Working with federal and private housing databases, HUD uses this web-based system to offer thousands of displaced families referrals to longer term housing. Full release
House Approves Military Pay Raise

VA Under Fire for GI Bill Delays

US: UN Wrong on Afghan Attack Deaths

A U.S. investigation disputes a UN report that found "credible evidence" that up to 90 civilians died in a raid on a western Afghan village, saying an after-battle assessment found most of the victims were Taliban fighters. The U.S. believes up to seven civilians may have died in the attack, along with up to 35 Taliban. Full release
HUD READIES DISASTER ASSISTANCE FOR GULF HURRICANE VICTIMS

WASHINGTON - U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Steve Preston today announced HUD is ready to speed federal disaster assistance to hurricane-ravaged counties throughout the Gulf Coast and provide support to homeowners and low-income renters forced from their homes following Hurricane Gustav. This assistance includes foreclosure relief for families whose damaged homes are insured through the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) living in presidentially declared disaster areas. Full release
