Senators demand answers from Freddie Mac
2/8/2012
A group of 10 U.S. senators is calling on major mortgage investor Freddie Mac to answer charges that it is working counter to its mission by placing bets against homeowners.

Freddie Mac was founded to add stability to the nation's residential mortgage market and make it easier for homeowners and would-be homeowners to secure affordable housing, the senators wrote in a letter to the Federal Housing Finance Agency on February 8. Recent reports, however, indicate that Freddie Mac may be working against that goal by making sizable investments that would only pay off if Americans remain stuck in mortgages with interest rates well above the market value.

"If the inability of homeowners to refinance their homes enhances Freddie Mac’s bottom line, this is especially troubling," the senators wrote. "Freddie Mac exists to support the housing market, and should not have a financial incentive to make it more difficult for struggling homeowners."

The group of Democratic senators, spearheaded by Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Mark Begich of Alaska, also includes Al Franken of Minnesota and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania. Vermont's Bernie Sanders is the lone independent of the group.

Veterans are able to secure low interest VA home loans, helping them avoid much of the foreclosure crisis facing the rest of Americans. More vets took advantage of the loans in 2011 than at any time in the last eight years, according to recent information released by VA.
