MLK Day produces help for veterans
1/16/2012
Martin Luther King Jr. Day generally brings out the humanitarian side of people as the doctor himself called on others to help those in need, and this year is no exception.
Dozens of local volunteers in the Omaha, Nebraska, area are working with Habitat for Humanity to maintain and preserve homes for veterans and their families, according to NBC affiliate WOWT.
Employees from Home Depot and AmeriCorps will work together with Omaha's Habitat to help realize Dr. King's vision of making the world a better place.
“As veterans are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, attention is increasingly focused on ways to honor veterans and support the transition back home, especially given the current economic circumstances that limit job opportunities and exacerbate availability of affordable housing,” Amanda Brewer, executive director at Habitat Omaha, told the news source.
Veterans benefits can also be found on the internet. According to the Charleston Daily Mail, former service members in West Virginia have a new online resource at www.wvmilitaryconnection.org to help search for employment, healthcare, and other forms of knowledge and information.
