A new West Virginia war memorial will honor lost, missing local soldiers.
West Virginians plan new memorial for lost, missing troops
2/3/2012
A planning committee in a southern West Virginia county has begun deliberation on a new veterans memorial to honor local troops.

The memorial, which will be constructed in Fayette County, will highlight some of the lesser-known modern wars in addition to the world wars, Vietnam and Korea, according to local news source the Register-Herald. Committee members feel it's important for younger people to be made aware of more modern conflicts, even though no soldiers from Fayette County died in the military actions in Panama, Grenada, the Persian Gulf, Iraq or Afghanistan.

Fayetteville, located in the heart of the county, is known for its stonework and, as such, the committee has decided to fashion the new memorial out of rough-hewn stone and granite, according to the news source. While no final designs have been agreed upon, the memorial is expected to run 30 feet by five feet and will sit inside the gates at Huse Memorial Park.

City council members and residents teamed up with the American Legion Lafayette Post 149 in planning the memorial. A final proposal on the design is expected in a couple months.

The Fayette memorial will join other monuments to veterans in the state. The West Virginia Veterans Memorial in Charleston, West Virginia, took nearly nine years to complete at a cost of roughly $4 million. It comprises a reflecting pool surrounded by four limestone monoliths. Their polished black granite interiors hold the names of more than 10,000 West Virginians who fought and died in battle during the previous century.
