New resource center to help Georgia's veterans
2/2/2012
Veterans in Acworth, Georgia, have a new resource at their disposal to help them and their families navigate the world of
veterans benefits: the VA and the City of Acworth on February 1 opened a Veterans Information and Referral Office.
The VIRO, which will be located at 4315 Senator Russell Avenue, will be open on the first and third Wednesdays and the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to a local news source. The office will be staffed largely by volunteer members of the local American Legion, and will help educate visitors on veterans benefits and services, and help vets network with other experts.
Visiting veterans are encouraged to bring their Form DD-214 discharge papers, and may be asked to fill out forms regarding the services they enquire about, so that VIRO staff can follow up with them, according to the news report. In addition to retired service members, family members, widows and widowers may also be eligible to receive various services.
Veterans benefits in Georgia could get a further boost thanks to a bill before the General Assembly, which calls for a "Returning Veterans Task Force" to facilitate returning servicemembers' reintegration into civilian life.
