VA announces crisis text line for vets
2/16/2012
Troubled veterans looking for help have a new way to reach out. The Department of Veterans Affairs recently announced the addition of text messaging to its Veterans Crisis Line.

The Veterans Crisis Line has been in operation since July 2007, and has so far helped more than 18,000 veterans in crisis, according to VA stats. The service already operates via telephone and online chat, but as of February 15, servicemen and women can text with crisis counselors at VA 24 hours a day.

By reaching out to trained staff, many of whom are veterans themselves, troops can start to overcome their troubles, and be directed toward veterans benefits and services that might further help them, VA officials said.

“Offering text messaging services will help VA reach more veterans and their friends and families,” said Dr. Janet Kemp, VA’s national mental health director for suicide prevention. "VA wants all Veterans to know that confidential support is only a text message away.”

VA is joined in its efforts by two other veterans service organizations, Vets Prevail and Vets4Warriors. Both of these organizations offer additional confidential crisis counseling and service referrals.

The issue of soldiers' mental health has taken more of a spotlight in recent years as afflictions such as post traumatic stress disorder become better understood. A newly proposed law in Iowa would help bring mental health professionals to underserved rural communities, according to Central Iowa's Times-Republican newspaper.
