Young lawyers to help soldiers with legal questions
2/1/2012
A troop of lawyers will gather in New Orleans on February 3 during the American Bar Association's mid-year meeting to offer free legal advice to servicemen and women seeking federal
veterans benefits.
The effort, dubbed "Project Salute: Young Lawyers Serving Veterans," is a combined venture on the part of the ABA's Young Lawyers Division, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, Tulane University and Loyola University. From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the VFW Post 8793 in New Orleans, volunteer lawyers will be on hand to answer veterans' questions.
Representatives from social services and legal aid providers will also be on hand to address questions that do not immediately pertain to federal veterans benefits, according to information from the ABA. Veterans are requested to bring DD Form 214, recent ratings decisions and other documents that may relate to the federal benefits they are applying for.
The ABA Young Lawyers Division is planning on holding at least two more such free sessions to aid veterans over the coming year. The next is scheduled to take place during May in Nashville, Tennessee, with another session in Chicago during the ABA's annual meeting in August.
